For this project, I selected A Way of Looking at Things by Peter Zumthor from a choice of two publications. The aim of the project was to design and produce a fully realised editorial book layout that visually communicated the atmosphere, ideas and creative philosophy presented within the text.
The project focused heavily on typographic experimentation and editorial composition. Throughout the design process, I explored elements such as typography, leading, type scale, spacing and character placement in order to create layouts that reflected the reflective and atmospheric nature of Zumthor’s writing. Rather than presenting the text in a conventional format, I aimed to use typography as a visual language that enhanced the emotional tone and pacing of the publication.
Across the spreads, I experimented with variations in type weight, enlarged words and characters, and adjusted the axis and rotation of selected text to create rhythm, emphasis and movement throughout the book. These design decisions helped reinforce key themes within the writing while encouraging a more engaging and immersive reading experience.
The final outcome was professionally assembled using French folds and adhesive binding techniques to create a physical book artefact. The project was completed with the addition of a custom designed dust jacket, helping to unify the visual identity of the publication and strengthen the overall presentation of the final piece.
